Lead acid batteries either start or power cars, forklift trucks, buses, boats, trains & electric wheelchairs all over the globe.

During power outages, lead acid batteries provide quiet, pollution-free emergency power for critical operations such as air-traffic control towers, hospitals, railroad crossings & sever rooms. In these situations the telephones stay on and this is because every major telephone company in the world, including mobile telephone service providers, uses lead acid batteries as backup power to the telecommunications systems.

Lead acid batteries power electric fork trucks used in warehouses, factories, mines, and ships. They also power the shuttle vehicles in airports, as well as wheelchairs, amusement park shuttles and golf carts. On the road, lead acid batteries power electric law-enforcement vehicles, buses, and very soon mail delivery vans

The Paralympics are just round the corner and Team GB has a real fighting chance of finishing in the top 3 once again.

In the building of the stadium, vast amounts of metals were used in the construction …

. Part of the roof’s supporting structure is 2,500 tonnes of steel tubing recycled from old gas pipelines

. 10,000 tonnes of steel was used to build the venue. This is much less than the amounts used in other Olympic Stadiums.

. The permanent lower tier has space for 25,000, and a lightweight steel and concrete upper tier holds a further 55,000 spectators. The upper tier can be taken away after the Games.

A hawk named Willow flies around the Stadium. Its job is to stop the pigeons from nesting!

The 2012 Paralympic Games begins Wednesday29 August 2012, and ends Sunday9 September 2012

OLYMPIC MEDAL FACTS: The gold medal actually contains very little gold. It’s made up of 92.5% silver and 1.34% gold with copper filling in the rest.

However the International Olympic Committee requires at least 6 grams of gold per medal. The ore is truly international too, as it comes from a copper mine near Salt Lake City, Utah and another in Mongolia

The silver medal is made up of 92.5% silver, with the remainder copper.

The bronze medal is made up of 97.0% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin
